Luke Vibert

No too many posters from 2003 up so far, here's one. It's for Luke Vibert and was promoted by Audiodelic which was Stephen Shannon and Darren from Maximum Joy who promoted the Stereolab gig i posted a while back.

Basia Bulat

Basia Bulat, on Rough Trade, from Canada playing Dublin in 2007. This was around the time I was doing loads of posters in this style, like the supersystem one I posted a few days ago. I suppose it also helped that these were pretty easy to do and I was worked off my feet at the time.

Somadrone

Somadrone is Neill O'Connor from Dublin. Here's a poster from last August '09 for a gig he was doing as part of Donal Dineen's nights in Odessa. I was going to a Christ-like thing with this one. It got a bit compromised and ended up like this. I'm reminded of this one because tonight in Dublin is Somadrone's last gig for the forseeable future (Dublin Art Mill Studios). As soon as I heard this I thought, emigration. And sure enough Neill is moving to San Fancisco. Gotta admit to being a bit jealous. Ireland sucks at the moment. Bands are quitting left right and centre and I reckon emigration is a major factor.

Kaleidoscope Night

Kaleidoscope is a monthly club happening in Odessa Club in Dublin. It is curated by the violinist Clíodhna Ryan and cellist Kate Ellis and their aim is to take classical music out of the concert hall and put on an interesting and new night of music. We've done four posters for this night so far, all variations on a simple design. They're really happy with the job, that means I am too!

Anais Mitchell

Anais Mitchell poster from January of 2009. Reminded of this because I just read an email from Righteous Babe Records about a tour she's doing with Erin McKeon in January 2010. They're playing in the Seamus Ennis Cultural Centre in The Naul in Dublin. Never heard of the place, looks kind of interesting though.

Emmy The Great

English folk singer Emmy The Great doing a gig in Dublin in July. Here's the poster, it's pretty much her album cover, First Love, with another bit of her website and some careful editing.

Hype Summer Soundsystem

This was for last summer's regular Friday night gig in Dublin. This just laid out the thing and then there was weekly specific ones. As usual with 90% of my work there isn't the luxury of weeks of prep, or days even, more like minutes or hours. 2009 was all about Gotham wasn't it? I opted for it here, it's instantly gratifying.

The Sun Ra Arkestra

Another 2 colour billboard poster. This one is as old as the hills, it's from 2001, for The Sun Ra Arkestra doing something of a double header with David Holmes. There's so much wrong with this one, it's an almost good looking poster.

Arab Strap

A billboard poster from 2003. Based on the Arab Strap album from the time. Interesting line up, Bright Eyes opening and then what must have been one of The Idiots' last gigs. Bright Eyes's first Irish gig maybe? Not sure.

Supersystem

Hipper than hip New York band Supersystem played CrawDaddy in 2006. They're the sort of band I'd like to like but just can't. Just checked their site for this and am not surprised to find that they've split up, I mean "Refusing to be satisfied by the familiar, Supersystem has always been ready to destroy a song in order to put it back together again. Hip-hop, electronica, punk rock, so-called world music a little bit of everything has gone into the architecture". The architecture. Jaysus.
Anyway, around this time I was enjoying doing loads of posters in this style. The actual gig info is OTT on this but you've gotta do what you've gotta do. (notice the arm fail)

Bright Eyes

An old 2 colour billboard poster today. This is for Bright Eyes playing Whelan's in 2003. I think this was his second time in Ireland, supported this time by me ol' mukka Goodtime John.

Seasick Steve (again)

There he is. Seasick Steve again. This time from February 2008 and playing in Tripod. And sure won't "the greatest living bluesman" be back in Dublin in February 2010, fair play to him.

Damo Suzuki

Damo Suzuki is quite a regular visitor to Dublin. Here's a poster for a show in 2008. Actually this isn't the poster. It finally went out in a more, er, readable format. I did like this though, in part because it was was done in about 2 minutes!
No post yesterday, first weekday no-show yet. It was a busy day.

Favourite Albums 2000 - 2009

Well I did say this was coming a few days back, my albums of the 2000s. I thought a good way to approach this was to think of albums that I've enjoyed enough to recommend to someone. Usually failing. Ha!

The albums pictured above are: (in no order)
The Streets : A Grand Don't Come For Free
Adebisi Shank : This Is An Album By Adebisi Shank
Ani Difranco : Revelling Reckoning
The Donnas : Spend The Night
Marillion : Marbles
Mumblin' Deaf Ro : The Herring And The Brine
Phoenix : It's Never Been Like That
Slipknot : Vol 3 The Subliminal Verses
Sloan : Never Hear The End of It
System Of A Down : Toxicity
Ween : White Pepper
Weezer : Red
Adam & Joe : Song Wars Vol 1
Large Mound : My Whole Life Is Have To

I started writing a bit about each album but, ah, who cares. Check out Large Mound on the list. Yea.. my band, how could it not be there?

(edit) The ohmygodhowcouldiforgetthis album!!
The Notwist : Neon Golden

Thurston Moore

December 2007, almost exactly two years ago. Thurston Moore was touring his second third album and visited Dublin. "Trees Outside The Academy" is a good album (this poster is pretty much just the cover with some extra text) but at this gig when they went into the "Psychic Hearts" section it went to whole new level! I was totally blown away, love love love that album.
Reminded of this because Sonic Youth are playing here on Sunday night at Vicar Street, I blogged about that gig back in October.
I met Thurston once and had a chat, I even gave him a Large Mound CD. I read recently that he hates CDs doesn't listen to any he's given, ha! classic.

Aimee Mann (2)

Aimee Mann back in Dublin last year. Here is the colour billboard poster. This was a double bill with Irish musician Sharon Shannon. October 2008 and recession was kicking in, this and a few other gigs got moved around and this show ended up in Tripod.
Reminded of this because Aimee is going to be on The Best Show On WFMU tonight.
